The Number of Young Motorists Convicted of Driving Without Insurance Has More than Doubled

The number of young motorists convicted of driving without insurance has more than doubled over the past two years due to rising insurance premiums, according to new analysis.

Official data reveals that in 2023, 6,316 drivers aged 17 to 20 were convicted for driving without insurance, a 117 percent increase from 2,902 cases in 2021. This is also a 15 percent rise from the 5,486 convictions in 2022.

IAM RoadSmart, a road safety charity that conducted the study, warns that without intervention, there could be 'an epidemic of uninsured young motorists.'

These statistics are based on the number of 'IN10' endorsements (penalties for driving uninsured) recorded each year since 2021, when insurance premiums were considerably lower.
